(Works both ways so I appreciate greatly that the guidelines for this forum especially states the meaning in not being deliberately "gratuitous insulting" towards others.) I take great satisfaction that this forum has maintained such a tone of respect and politeness, without any flame wars or personal attacks. Blessed exception! Prayers it will remain free.

I take great satisfaction that this forum has maintained such a tone of respect and politeness, without any flame wars or personal attacks. Basic human civility or good manners is fundamental to debate and to the functioning of democracy but this virtue seems in peril from ideologues on both extremes of the ideological divide especially on social media. More and more I notice that as society rejects the Christian hard teachings usually related to sexuality but also the value of individual life, the "softer" teachings around mercy, empathy, practical compassion and forgiveness are also being abandoned. Often it is assumed these virtues are part of being a decent person but as we dismantle Christian Civilisation it is naive to imagine we will keep the nice softer kinder aspects of life produced by 2000 years of Christian practice and theology . It's hard to tear down our fundamental moral structures and still expect everything of value we take for granted to keep functioning as if nothing of importance has happened. And yet that is the lie we are constantly being sold.

Re "woke ideology" - I think there's reason to be optimistic - especially after watching this interview with Andrew Doyle. The woke brigade are so easy to send up. Librarians get a mention at around 22 mins in. youtu.be/v6iaqewwTpA

I'm a big fan of Desmond Fennell but he did call himself an 'intellectual' at the start, which comes across as a trifle arrogant. I can see how, in the rather humble context of Irish attitudes - beautifully humble, I mean - Fennell would alienate by calling himself this. But, personally, I don't see any problem with him identifying like that. He is very erudite and capable of acute, original thinking. IMHO, there's a LOT to chew over, digest in his books, especially the later ones. I hope that someday he might indeed be remembered as one of Ireland's intellectuals in this dumbed-down epoch.
