I recall my Leaving Cert English teacher reading passages from The Jail Journal in class many years ago. Nowadays he would possibly risk being branded a racist and losing his job if a clever enough woke student or parent complained.

The relationship of Irish America and race is not always a pretty one. On the positive side most Irish fought for the Union armies, who at least up to a couple of years ago ,were regarded as the good guys. The close connection of the Irish with the Democratic party is I suspect not a glorious one on the matter of racial relations. The southern Democrats had pretty outrageous views on blacks up until fairly recent times , a fact that has been airbrushed from much commentary.

The Irish worker newly arrived on US shores was originally competing with freed black slaves for low paid jobs . Naturally modern woke activists will have little understanding for immigrants to the USA who may have had no money but did have the all important priviledge of a white skin.
