Every so often I come across numbers that shock or cheer me up but I then forget about them.
Anyways here are two numerical facts that might intrigue. The average Irish daily death toll from all causes is 88 people. So when you hear 6 died from Covid then approximately 82 died from other things deemed less important.
Irish civil aviation is one of the largest globally even in absolute terms. Most jet liners are not actually bought but leased by airlines. 20% of all of all leased planes on the planet are registered in Ireland.
Ryanair which began life as a one plane operation, widely mocked and ridiculed has now beaten the mighty Lufthansa to become Europe's biggest airline in 2019.Naturally Covid is not good news for aviation.

The number of houses built by Dublin city council last year? To put it in a little context there are around 10,000 people officially clarified as homeless in Dublin most of whom are in emergency hostels. 9000? 900? No a grand total of 90 council houses was built in 2019 in Dublin.
To put things in context this year so far Aodhan O Riordain TD (The wokest Irish person alive) Labour , Social Democrats and leftist allies have sucessfully objected to planning permission to over 1000 social housing places in Clontarf. and Santry among other places. One objection other than pandering to NIMBY neighbours worried about riff raff lowering the tone of their area or lowering property prices is these houses aren't being built by the local corporation directly.
I know a local Social Democrat who confirmed this was a matter of principle and if people had to do without housing short term then it would be fine in the long run when the state was building everything.

St. Odorico of Pordedone, celebrated about two weeks back, were said to have baptised over 20 000 chinese during his brief time as missionary in Peking (early 14th century) and were also highly original as he went back to Italy by foot (!) a journey around 15 000 kilometers. It was an active time in Peking of about three years, and it took about three years to return using the apostles horses. Gives perspective to the terms mission as well as "man of action" and one wonders how it can be done. But three years makes over 1000 days so it is really about 20 people a day. Not impossible with the zeal of a saint.
