Joe Bidon is the next president of the USA. Perhaps it's because of how secularised and grown up we now are but there isn't the same sense of pride in Ireland that one of our own has achieved one of the most powerful offices on earth.
Biden identifies strongly as Irish(5/8s) and as catholic. He is much more explicitly Irish and Catholic than JFK for example was. I doubt we will see a new version of those old photos of Kennedy , Pope John XXiii and the sacred heart to reappear. I wonder where they all went? We can , and probably will debate how he will implement that Catholic faith when he is sworn in but it is unimaginable that an actual modern Irish catholic politician could use the labels Biden himself has used about himself.
He is a catholic in the Pope Francis mould. He is very explicit about this .He is not ashamed to talk about his catholic faith Which has helped him during some terrible personal tragedies. He seems to have genuine empathy for suffering people. On the other hand he is a politician who has given the nod to progressive gender , LGBT , and abortion supporters who form a large cohort of the Democratic party. He has publically voted for these measures at radical variance with catholic teaching.
He is also able to get things done with opponents which was something Trump could not manage. This is something he shares with Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. He will be the oldest American president and there are serious concerns with his mental state. He ran a bunker like campaign and his actual policies were rarely scrutinised. Uncle Joe was elected by a wide swathe of opinion because he wasn't Trump not because he was a great candidate.
The blue wave failed to materialise and Trump managed to achieve a very respectable bloc of support. There is no mandate for radical change . Many in middle America were upset at rioting , anti police propaganda and leftist ideologies in academia and the media People who may not have liked Trump voted for him as the lesser of two evils.
After all the hysteria around Fascism and a broken America ( yet again) we will please God see the strengths of the US constitution assert themselves. Democracy is not perfect but she is the only alternative to tyrannies on the right and left

Democracy is not perfect but she is the only alternative to tyrannies on the right and left That's a generous summary of Biden. I don't think I could have been that generous. Looking at old clips of Biden he comes across as a bit of lightweight and fluffy headed even back in the day when he was younger. I don't think Joe will be doing or deciding anything. I actually feel sorry for him as he is obviously in his dotage and shouldn't be anywhere near a microphone, never mind a president. I think Kamala Harris will probably take over pretty soon as Joe will either have to stand down or will just be a non-talking figurehead. There is also evidence of corruption hanging over his son Hunter which has implications for Joe as well.

I can't acknowledge any pro-abortion politician as a Catholic politician, no matter how often they use the term. I don't judge their souls, just their policies. Interesting link on JFK and abortion. I didn't know this. I think Catholicism was more an ethnic tie than a faith to JFK, although once again I can't judge his soul. marchforlife.org/60-days-of-life-was-jfk-pro-life/I suppose we can hope that Biden's professed Catholicism may make him slower to clamp down on religious freedoms than Hillary Clinton would have been.

Granted it is broadly generous but it is critical too. It is hard to point to a Biden achievement and he is a Washington insider to his finger tips. I wonder how much of this dottery bewildered image is genuine? Biden has enough drive and ruthless ambition to run for and win the most important political office in earth. Just as I never bought the idea of "stupid " Trump or Boris I don't buy this image of Biden as a gormless old fool. He looks his age and he may not last 4 years. He will have access to the best health care on earth and may surprise us all. Many rulers were old men traditionally and ruled surprisingly well others were puppets or outstayed their time like De Valera and Churchill. Time will tell. The "end" of Trump is not the end of the world. He performed remarkably well but the current huff is undignified and childish. It time to accept the popular will and plan for the future.

I don't particularly like his maukish 1970s style of Catholicism (Look up the references to Eagles Wings on YouTube) but I cannot imagine there is any electoral advantage in it . Most Catholic politicians hide their faith or ignore it entirely. This side of Biden causes embarrassed silence in this branch of Democratland. I believe public support for abortion merits hellfire and is ultimately and literally demonic. Vast swathes of our society unfortunately support that and we have to pray , fast and argue and protest to convert them. Biden will resume state support for abortion providers. Traditionally Democrats do this . Republicans then reverse this. Whether this has any actual impact on numbers aborted I don't know. Attempts to expand abortion provision beyond that will probably end up in a more conservative supreme court. Biden is what we used to call a bad catholic. He is still a catholic though who will answer to God on judgement day. As will I and everyone else.

On JFK and religion. His sister is rumoured to have quipped that a book on his faith would be a very short book.
And lest there be any doubt of course objectively neither Biden or any of our own serpents at home who claim to be "devout" while supporting and promoting death are Catholic leaders. Or they are as Catholic as Bishop Judas Iscariot.

He is still a catholic though who will answer to God on judgement day. As will I and everyone else. I'm currently reading CSLewis' Perelandra and, although it's set in Venus with extraterrestrial characters,in today's world it all seems very real, with Professor Weston (or the devil taking his body) mouthing off philosophical arguments and loaded anecdotes to rationalise the disobeying of the one commandment that God gave the planet's original couple, including that the disobedience was God's original wish. This was written two decades before Kennedy declared that Catholicism wouldn't control his presidency(although that article suggests that ethics did win out with his supreme court judge nomination, perhaps he was keeping it seperate without complete contradiction) and before dissident theology took complete control of any church. One would almost think that modern exorcism- or antichrist- films had been influenced by the scenes and psychological tensions in Lewis' Cosmic Trilogy, this one in particular (but I wouldn't have thought that they'd been popular enough to have inspired modern culture that much?)
