In a year when the rights to assembly, protest and to publically worship have been binned (for most of the year) the Fianna Fail minister of Justice plans to inflict a Hate speech bill on us. The NGOs who push this sort of nonsense go beyond making a "hateful intention" an aggravating factor in threatening or violent crime.
If I get into a row with my Chinese work mate over a work matter and clobber him and he accepts it was a non racial attack another colleague can step in and say it was racially motivated because they feel it was. And I will get a heavier jail sentence as a result. Surely this is open to abuse just as cake bakers are now obliged to bake gay wedding cakes regardless of their personal beliefs.
The effective right to free speech has also been undermined by a spineless media who do not ask hard questions of government and who have become semi official spokespeople for government agencies. Medics who dissent from NPHET are pressurised to leave state bodies. And we are all told to don our green jerseys and trust the government yet again.
Perhaps minister Chambers should work on a Free speech law and proper defences for whistle blowers instead of going down in history as someone blind to the dangerous totalitarian drift of our times?
