This could well mark the beginning of the end of the disastrous pontificate of Pope Francis. The former apostolic nuncio to the United States has accused Francis of repealing sanctions imposed by Pope Benedict XVI on then-Cardinal McCarrick for sexual abuse. This is a charge most serious, perhaps without precedent in modern times. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò's 11-page statement, released to the National Catholic Register, accuses Pope Francis of covering for McCarrick, ignoring the sanctions that Pope Benedict had imposed on McCarrick, and also of making McCarrick a trusted counselor who was instrumental in the Pope's decision to elevate heterodox bishops such as Blase Cupich of Chicago and Joseph Tobin of Newark to the College of Cardinals. I wonder what happens next. Maybe there'll be a shakedown at the Vatican.

This morning, very early, a document by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano’ came out. In it, he says that in 2013 he had a personal talk with you at the Vatican, and that in that talk, he spoke to you explicitly of the behavior of and the sexual abuse by former-Cardinal McCarrick. I wanted to ask you if this was true. I also wanted to ask something else: the Archbishop also said that Pope Benedict sanctioned McCarrick, that he had forbidden him to live in a seminary, to celebrate Mass in public, he couldn’t travel, he was sanctioned by the Church. May I ask you whether these two things are true?

I cannot pretend to know Francis’ mind but It certainly is an invitation for the press to opine. His “faith” may be in that they have had his back and he expects them to continue to cover for him hence his invoking Omerta for himself as a signal to his allies to go easy while he attempts to hide in plain sight. That would be quite a foolish assumption about the press but perhaps believable for a provincial rube who is quite egotistical and fairly naive.
A more interesting interpretation is that he is inviting the press to put him out of his misery. As professionals they should be able to do the job but who knows? Maybe he’ll say something later.

How fitting of the Herald: The route of the abuse debacle is littered with the carnage of misapplied caution. The truth is we can no longer afford to mistake acting wisely with failing to act. Vigano is either in his dotage, lying, or telling the truth. To date, many accussers have been accused of the first 2, but nearly always turn out to be telling the truth. The Herald better have a substantive basis for doubting Vigano. At any rate, a conflagration of the curia is precisely what is needed. No purge can be acomplished without discomfiting the guilty. They will certainly drag as many down with them as they can, but that only shows how deep the rot runs and how badly a house cleaning is in order. |

I was puzzled the pope didn't just say this was all nonsense and categorically deny it. There are a few conspiracy type allegations in the document but the main points are devastating if true.
Vigano has taken a major risk here as breaching papal confidentiality merits excommunication as far as I know.
If he is lying the pope should say so and discipline him. This will not go away by relying on journalists to ferret out the truth.
If the allegations are true Pope Francis will go down in infamy.

If most parts of its contents really are substantial this may prove to be some almost landmark point of reference. Could this actually have validity it provides an extreme challenge for any number of solidly skilled investigations in the wake of all recent turns. Or was everything simply just an odd loose string of fake news and lies delivered from a badly disappointed halfsenile crackpot? Truth will tell. Until then are we left to guess what is meant by the statement "speaks for itself". If anyone can understand anything by that formulation it would be good. This was no happy news either way.

Yesterday's Sunday Gospel was quite apt in these difficult times when St John reminded us of those who stopped following Jesus after they denounced his teaching as intolerable.
Peter's reply 'Lord to whom shall we go?' sums up for me why in spite of all I am still catholic. Staying close to Christ despite the shameful sinfulness present in high and low places and deep in each of our fickle hearts, is what he is calling every believer to do in these darkening days.

To emphasis the seriousness of this, even Church Militant's Micheal Voris, famous among Trad circles for going out of his way not to criticise the Pope on matters of theology (while everyone else was rightfully freaking out over Amoris Laetitia) has made a video calling for his Abdication over this scandal. Which he has followed up today with another 20 minute video going into the matter. We have, like it or not, entered Interesting Times in the Church. |
