The start of 2021 has begun with a bang!
With the background of the Capitol being occupied, the Social media companies have not let a crisis go to waste. A massive purge of accounts has been permanently deleted with the highest profile being the current sitting President.
A new app called Parler (free speech driven app) that had been popular with those banned from Twitter, including supporters of President Trump has been temporarily banned by the top app stores Google Play and Apple.
I imagine this is just the beginning of the purge's. There is also talk of a new patriot act being written to make sure the Trump wave does not happen again.
Let's discuss the purge and how this will effect the USA and more importantly the Emerald Isle.

Lest everyone runs for the hills let's remember the Democrats won by quite a narrow margin. Biden is a political centrist and will need to appeal to Republicans especially to get measures through the Senate. The new regime cannot simply silence or ignore the 48% who voted Republican. They are spooked that despite all of Trumps antics they didn't get an overwhelming landslide victory.
The behaviour of Twitter and other media platforms is cowardly and despicable. They benefited financially from 4 years of pandering to Trumps nonsense and nastiness but only now pull the plug on him. They are also guaranting a future government will have to break up the monopoly they hold on media platforms. Their censorship will cost them dearly.
Censorship is something the Irish right is very familiar with. Driving people out of the public exchange of views doesn't strengthen democracy, it actively undermines it.

Little intelligent to say here, as I find it hard to follow these things closely. But I'm very glad you brought it up, Stephen. It seems really very important to be aware of and very disturbing.
I hope to be educated by this thread, which I think could be very insightful.
I would be interested to know more of why ComputingForever fell foul of the GAFA thought police and also what people make of these alternates that are turning up, Parler etc. Never even heard of Odysee.

Hello Stephen, This was a long time coming for Dave. Dave new this was coming and has built an alternative network of places to get his message out. On that Note I'm going to set up a new thread that people can post there favorite commentators and links to were to find them. I think this is important in the age of big tech censorship. If Twitter is objecting to Tweets that promote violence or tempt others to do so it will have a full time job rooting out users in Arab countries and various nut jobs on the left and right normally sitting behind a keyboard inciting race war or whatever.
Twitter itself is a source of grave sin in that it is intrinsically inclined to wrath and rage. It has been a malign force and taps into something vile and base about the fallen human soul.
All who read this will no doubt rejoice that Harry and Meghan are withdrawing from main stream social media including Facebook and Twitter to seek privacy . Again.

British journalist Andrew Neil dropped by the BBC last year as he is white straight, in his 60s and is right of centre has raised 60 million pounds to set up a news channel deliberately to compete with the BBC/Sky outlook . He plans to broadcast in 2021 and should be available in the Republic too. Spectator TV on YouTube offers interesting interviews and discussions from a right of centre standpoint.
As long as there are enough people who want alternatives there will be (eventually) a market solution to enforced media consensus. Even in Ireland we now have GRIPT news media who adopt a conservative critical and genuinely diverse news approach. They have started to make videos with SME businesses that have been devastated by state sponsored Covid shut downs.

His videos are good input for any critical debate. Glad to hear he reverted to his Irish Faith the previous year. Blessed works!

When Amazon Web Services ditched Parler, many called for the tech giant to do the same to Gab. The upstart social network responded to one user, tweeting, “Bad news communist, Gab isn’t hosted by Amazon. Gab is hosted by Gab.”
The last few years Gab has been building all the infrastructure required to run a social media company by themselves: From email systems and cryptocurrency payment platforms to computer servers and web browsers. Gab saw a huge spike in new users following the Capitol insurrection, with Torba claiming 40 million new visitors to the site and roughly 700,000 sign-ups per day.

Gab saw a huge spike in new users following the Capitol insurrection, with Torba claiming 40 million new visitors to the site and roughly 700,000 sign-ups per day. Would it do any harm to link some of those channels at Facebook itself in terms of censor delete etc, or can that eventually maim the alternative sites somehow? (Two sides: a) Facebook might put bans on the links, b) people who follow the link may be disturbed by junk on the "alternative" sites) Would they few who are doing relevant criticism, like computing forever, prefer people just visit the various recent venues separate from the censoring area, or is cross-linking better for helping in reach out? It looks like Democracy will have some efforts still. Probably both Leftist and conservative Right, and anyone movements in between for that matter, can be just as positive to every practical ways to better, serious and more open-minded fora than a censor-driven ex-normal desert. Critical view edit: It looks to a layman like me that both that place odysee.com and bitchute is no more than a kind of mirroring of thousands already posted videos from the other the giants. So why bother to subscribe to the other "alternative" sites when there are really no alternatives on the global market at all? Literally all cyberspace appears to be bought up and ruled in every detail by the giants so the only difference between the giants and the so called alternatives are that the latter are not taking off the many censored and blocked sources but otherwise no more free than the other? Poor little difference, or perhaps that is only too pessimistic in terms of wide open democracy space. It will be junkier, and less censored, but will it be good?

“...you are strong only as long as you don't deprive people of everything. For a person you've taken everything from is no longer in your power. He's free all over again.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Thank you for the reminder, from a source worth his pain of mind. It would be of interest to read his biography some day. Even thought it may feel a little bit too "relevant" to our times to be comfortable. Joseph Pearce has written about him too. (Archbishop Athanasius Schneider has also written about his experience of a stolen childhood and youth in the mentally overwhelming Red Desert.)

Solzhenitsyn is one of the nearest things we Europeans have to a modern prophet in the biblical sense of that word - a man chosen by God to speak his truth to the powerful. The historical experience of Soviet oppression of man is now reviving in our time in a more subtle insidious way. The communists never succeeded in reading private thoughts and persecuting people who said the wrong thing about biological gender.
Solzhenitsyn's biography speeches and novels are all valuable resources when we have so few leaders of substance left to warn , encourage ,inspire and comfort us.
