Glad to see Archbishop Martin of Armagh has issued a statement urging Catholics and others not to be intimidated into silence. The other Archbishop Martin seems to be adopting a more relaxed position saying the church's view is well known and the bishops will be taking a back seat. Prudentially it may be wise for bishops not to be leading a campaign to defend the 8th but I wonder will Dr Martin apply the same logic to Episcopal statements on Immigration or Climate Change ?

This is the point that makes a nonsense of his excuses. The man is a disgrace.

The minister for health(preserving life) gave a sinister speech yesterday preaching about Magdalene convents , the Tuam baby home ,the Kerry Babies and adoption scandals - ie unwanted pregnancies in our past and proposed the solution to unwanted children today is to legalise their killing at home in the name of compassion.
No mention whatsover was made of what actual procedures we will legalise , how the bodies are disposed of and if medical staff have any real right to refuse to facilitate the taking of human life. We are told all of this is personal sensitive and unique to every woman but why is it sensitive if we are not proposing the destuction of a human life ?

At least the English-speaking world hasn't reached the church-burning vigilantism going on in Chile at the moment. Not that abortion is any less evil... It's amazing how people bring up whatever history suits. Nobody, to my knowledge, has ever considered putting an end to Olympic(and other sports event) torch relays or the making of VWs despite the origin of these traditions bring connected with Hitlerism. And Hugo Boss is still doing well despite it's self-confessed connection with Nazism.

The leader of Fianna Fail has joined the forces of allowing the killing of future Irish citizens in the name of choice. I have always believed Martin was completely opportunistic and that his previous pro life noises were unethusiastic and cynical. He has obviously judged the moment ripe to abandon the pro life cause in the name of conscience. This is a serious blow though to the pro life cause.
No party leader supports protecting the unborn. The upcoming referendum is becoming more and more a one sided battle. David once again takes on Goliath.

I was actually quite surprised Martin would take a stance which is so controversial within his own party.
Yes, I think they are all careerists and opportunists. Perhaps Sinn Fein contains some politicians of conviction (much as I detest that party).

I was not surprised Micheál Martin wants abortion for any reason up to 12 weeks. I would love to know what he will get for coming out so strong for abortion?
I know FF supporters and members that are horrified/ shocked at the announcement.

I know FF supporters and members that are horrified/ shocked at the announcement. I presume the logic of Micheal Martin is coldly political. Fianna Fail are weak in Dublin and I bet his advisors are telling him to pitch for the liberal feminist urban vote. It's straight out of Machiavelli. Fianna Fail were the most pro life party and I think the leader should have reflected that policy or resigned. If this referendum is to be beaten and I think it is still possible it needs organisation and strategy. Fianna Fail activists and members can provide that. To date the pro repeal campaign has been running rings around the pro life campaign which appears to be lamely reacting to a very strong ,confident and well resourced movement.

TDs such as Kate O'Connell that are using the ' catholic oppressor' card can't possibly know much about the pro-life movement on a global scale, which is greatly nourished by, but never 'owned' by, Catholicism.

It Would be interesting to know how much money is flowing in from abroad to the Pro abortion side. Irish conservative need to start fighting the Culture wars and organising.

Miss O Connell is one of the most bitterly anti catholic TDs at present. The spirit of anti catholic hatred in Ireland now dwells in the hearts of mainly middle class, catholic educated, upwardly mobile feminists. She regularly denies she is pro abortion. She only wants it freely available on widespread grounds and paid for by the state. I would shudder to imagine what pro abortion must mean in her eyes.

Political events over the last few days have been appalling. Just when you thought politicians couldn't get worse another pops up with a further slap in the face for anyone with pro life views.
On Monday night , a day after Holocaust memorial day, the taoiseach pushed an extreme feminist position repeating the American abortion slogan "Safe Legal and Rare". The interview with ironically the children's and health ministers was deeply chilling. I had hoped Simon Coveney would offer some resistence but now it emerges he too backs repeal and only quibbles about the details of how much abortion we will permit. Our leaders are profoundly morally corrupt and our pastors are largely silent. What a spectacle of cold malice masquerading as compassion.

I'm not sure if anybody else came across the 'pro-life' dress apparently worn by a singer (I hadn't heard of) named Joy Villa at the Grammy awards early this week. It was pictured in one news service on my phone but wasn't covered by other press or tv that I know of.
