Tonight a group of Trump supporters have stormed the US capitol building in Washington. It appears security was appalling and no one planned this farcical carry on. To date the president hasn't told them to go home.
Republicans also look like they have lost the Georgia Senate election thus giving Biden a tiny narrow Senate majority.
Some of us here are aware of a certain collective insanity that is prevalent in the western world for some time. Much of a this nuttiness can be found on the left. However there is a right wing variant which is a mirror image of the madness of BLM and the "Not my president" protests of 4 years ago.
This evening the US looks perilously close to a badly governed banana Republic governed by a third rate wannabe caudillo.

Tucker Carlson reaction to the ongoing violence and protests youtu.be/721Ja6aOYSoI wonder will this be a pivotal moment in US history or a footnote? I tend to agree with him. A protestor was killed through police brutality or incompetence, it seems. I don't think the people in the Capitol building represented any threat to the legislators. They shouldn't have been there, true, but you can see in the footage that they are pointing mobile phones and waving flags rather than threatening anyone with guns. I feel quite spooked today, but not in the way the media wants me to be.

Facebook and Twitter have locked the President's accounts, and the challenge to the election results seem to have been effectively neutralised. It almost seems like a US version of Tiananmen Square.

Trump is playing these people like a fiddle, he doesn't care about them.
They are so misinformed that it is impossible to talk with them about reality.
I hope this does not spread to Ireland.

I, for one, welcome our new corporate overlords.

Hi Stephen, I think you'll agree that Trump is not your average politician. I'm not putting forward an argument but stating my opinion which is that it is obvious that Trump only cares about himself. His words and actions reveal that he is a conman and the mob are his marks. The most disturbing thing about this is that a substantial number of people can't see the obvious. Its like what the difference between the colours white and black? You either see it or you don't. But I suppose it twas ever thus, the fools will follow the conman to their mutual self-destruction.

I disagree. I think Trump is a true American patriot, for all his undoubted egotism. If he had been just another politician, he would have taken the line of least resistance and gone along with the corporate/globalist/liberal establishment once he was in office-- as previous Republican Presidents have done. But he didn't. He took another course, including avoiding the wars and foreign entanglements that every other President in recent memory, Democrat and Republican, have pushed America into. I can't say whether he's cut up over the people who lost their lives yesterday. (We will hear much more about them than we will about the many people murdered by Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and their sympathizers, who Trump has steadfastly opposed and denounced.) But I believe he is a genuine idealist in his own way.

Hello starlight, I would agree President Trump is not the average politician. I don't know if he cares only about himself or not. What matters to me is what he has done for America and the world. I think he is a mixed bag. (Speaking at Prolife march & support for nationalism Good / support for the state of Israel & general republican economic liberalism bad) What I would like to hear from more people is why (examples) he was a bad president rather than Orange man bad (not saying that is you)! Just let you know I am not a fan of the Republican or Democratic Party. Out of interest are you from the USA?

I know you use the qualifying word "almost" Maolsheachlann but the Tiananmen square massacre involved the use of main battle tanks and crack troops against unarmed civilians resulting in well over a thousand deaths. That was a real tyrannical episode.
Yesterday was no coup or insurrection or act of treason. It was an unplanned and silly escapade that only happened because of sloppy security. This in a super power that has spent trillions on security and thousands in lost lives since September 11th. American weakness was exposed for all her ghoulish enemies to sneer at at.
Of course the left are delighted with all of this and will no doubt use this stupid stunt to further restrict civil liberties and impose hate speech and the usual crazy laws that are all the rage in the dying west.
Incidently the capitol was also stormed by (leftist) protesters during Brett Kavanaghs selection debacle a few years ago. That wasn't a coup because the media agreed with them and don't like nasty catholic judges.

But Starlight, a Trump supporter could say the same thing about Biden and if 74 million people voted for Trump their vote has to be respected in a democracy. I'm not a close follower of US politics but it seemed to me that the Democrats never accepted his presidency and from the start he had to battle, and he did. The media was so biased and half the people don't see that. It's the same here in Ireland. I'd support him just to try and get a level playing field again.

Do people really believe Trump won a landslide victory which was "stolen" ?
Should the courts/ Congress simply have declared Trump the winner regardless of the actual ballot?
Trump openly declared the election would be stolen based on zero evidence in advance. Simply stating something is a fact does not make it one. It isn't just people on the left who are prone to believing the big lie. Alas.
